John tossed down the note, fuming.

He gritted his teeth.

He couldn’t blame him.

While he trusted Danny, the idea of him taking Scout and Elijah along on one of his escapades to find out who had killed his sister was beginning to grind on him. Of course, it was their choice but every choice now held immense danger.

With no location given, he couldn’t follow and even if he knew where they were, how could he get there? Making his way into his garage, he stared at the Norton Big Four with sidecar. He hadn’t driven it in years. He closed the door and pushed the thought of going out from his mind. No. The last time you did that, people died.

He tried to stay busy, and keep his thoughts on anything but Scout or the dead DCI agent, but he couldn’t. It had been weighing on his mind since Frank had dropped him off. The thought of him doing something stupid. Could that DCI agent be the only one in town? And even if he found another one alive, would it matter now?

Sarah was dead.

The Millers were dead.

The Vipers were no more.

And the justice system in the town had all but collapsed in on itself out of fear. Fear of reprise, fear that arresting more people involved in the human trafficking ring might incur the wrath of other motorcycle clubs. Those who also sought to profit from the misery of others.

But it was so much more than trying to find justice for Scout, Danny’s sister, or even the Miller girls who were lost in the fire, it was a matter of principle.

Someone was covering it up. Trying their best to keep things under wraps. Sarah’s death might not have been proof of that but the DCI agent lying in a dumpster was. Whether that was the work of Sarah or Frank or someone on a smear campaign against Frank, that was to be seen.

But everything he’d been told to date didn’t add up. It was jumbled. The truth sounded like lies, and perceived lies could have been true.

As John tore apart a wall peppered with rounds — getting ready to replace it — he thought back to when Frank saw the agent lying dead. He liked to think he was a good judge of character.

There was nothing false about Frank at that moment. There was deep anger. A sense of betrayal.

Everything told him that Frank didn’t know about the DCI agent. If he had, and if Frank was responsible for the death of the Millers and was involved in some way with the trafficking of humans, then surely he would have killed the agent sooner?

Not a few days ago.

Why wait?

But what of Sarah? Had she gotten to him? Killed the agent to protect her father’s reputation? And then afterward, someone targeted her for her involvement in the death of multiple MC members? It was possible.

And then there was the big question: If it was Frank, why didn’t he kill him
